2014 FREDLA Leadership Camp

On July 16, 2014, the Family-Run Executive Director Leadership Association (FREDLA) hosted its first Leadership Camp for Executive Directors and Emerging Leaders of Family and Youth-Run Organizations.

Over 70 family and youth leaders from Guam, Alaska, Puerto Rico and everywhere in between, attended this incredible peer learning opportunity held as a Pre-Institute at the Georgetown Training Institutes in Washington, D.C.

A welcome and passionate opening was provided by Gary Blau, Chief of the Child, Adolescent and Family Branch of the Center for Mental Health Services. He energized the group with his empowering speech and extended an olive branch to FREDLA indicating he hoped SAMHSA and FREDLA would have a long and prosperous relationship.

Experienced family leaders from Maryland, Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Nebraska, and Massachusetts shared their personal experiences leading family run organizations and shared strategies for how they have faced the innumerable challenges inherent to the family run organization industry.

The 70+ participants received resources, handouts, and helpful publications on key areas of operations including supervising family member staff, financial management, planning strategically, evaluation and communications.

The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. One attendee stated “This was the best thing I attended at the Institutes”. Another participant stated “This was so helpful. I wish this would have been available years ago when I started as an Executive Director”.

Future Leadership Camps are being planned. If you would like more information or have an interest in attending a future Camp, please contact Malisa Pearson, FREDLA Project Coordinator, at mpearson@fredla.org.
